Opening Ceremonies at Mokdong, Sinyue and Guui Stadiums on April 18th
Opening salute fired simultaneously at all three stadiums
Victory chorus including Gyeonggi Sangsangsanggo and Masan Yongmago
On the first day of the 51st Bonghwangdae National High School Baseball Tournament, Korea’s largest high school baseball festival, opening salutes were blown at all three stadiums on the 18th. Masan Yongmago’s Cha Seung-jun (2 years) hit the first home run at Seoul’s Shinwol Stadium, while Wonju’s Park Soo-hyun (3 years), Kaesong’s Bae Gwang-ryul (3 years), and Seongnam’s Yoo Sang-woo (3 years) also drew cool arches at Mokdong Stadium and Guui Stadium.
As the only integrated tournament in Korea without regional qualifiers, the Bonghwang Daejeon has produced countless upsets, but this year, teams with long histories and traditions gritted their teeth from the first game. Gyeonggi Sangsang Sanggo, which reached the quarterfinals of this year’s Cheongryonggi, defeated Seoul Dongyanggo, which had beaten powerhouse Whimungo in the first round of last year’s Bonghwangdae, 8-1 (8 innings cold), while Jeonju taught this year’s newcomer Bundang BC a lesson with a 9-1 (7 innings cold) victory. Masan Yongmago, playing without high school standout pitcher Jang Hyun-seok (3 years), who signed with the LA Dodgers, also defeated 2017 founding team Daejeon First Go 3-2.
“We vowed to play a lot of games with the players and keep our best team colors until the last tournament of the year, the Bonghwangdae,” said Choi Deokhyun, head coach of Gyeonggi Sanggo. Masan Yongmago head coach Jin Min-soo said, “Our second-year players have gained a lot of experience. The players have a strong desire to finish in the top four.”
Gyeonggi Sangsung 8-1 Seoul Dongsan (8th inning cold)
Wonju 7-3 Bucheon
Gimhae 15-3 Gangwon (cold in the 5th inning – Mokdong over)
Gyeonggi Sanggo gave up the lead in the top of the fifth inning, but immediately fought back. In the bottom of the fifth, with runners on first and second, Shin Seung-min (3 years) hit a two-run double to left field to make it 2-1, and the next two batters, Lee Seo-joon (3 years) and Choi Chul-hyun (2 years), followed with RBI singles. Hwang Jae-hyun (3) pitched five innings of one-run ball to earn the win.
Won Ju-woo showed his clutch ability in the center field. With the bases loaded in the bottom of the third inning, No. 4 Gook Seung-seung (2 years) hit a leadoff double, and with runners on first and second, No. 5 Park Soo-hyun blasted a three-run home run over the left field fence.
Gimhae went on to dominate the Kangwon mound, led by Choi Eun-hak (3 years) and Lee Won-jun (2 years), who collected five and three RBIs, respectively.
Masan Yongmago 3-2 Daejeon Jeilgo
Jeonju 9-1 Bundang BC (7th inning cold)
Seongnam 13-6 Korea K-POP (8th inning cold – Shin-Wol Sang)
