LG’s Park Dong-won, ‘Catcher’s Home Run King,’ Named May’s Monthly MVP

LG Twins’ Park Dong-won has been named the 2023 Shinhan Bank SOL KBO League Monthly MVP for May.

Park earned his first career monthly MVP honor with a landslide victory, receiving 16 of 29 votes (55.2%) from journalists and 178,638 of 431,790 fan votes (41.4%) for a total of 48.27 points.

This is the first monthly MVP for LG since 2019 and the first time in four seasons. Im Chan-kyu, who topped his respective categories in May with a 1.13 ERA and four wins, finished second to teammate Park Dong-won with 15.32 total points.

Park Dong-won, who wore a new LG uniform this year, topped the home run category in May despite calling Jamsil Stadium, the largest stadium in Korea, home. He hit nine home runs in the month, showing a strong showing regardless of the ballpark. He even hit multi-homer games against Doosan in Jamsil on Sunday (May 7) and SSG in Munhak on Thursday (May 25).

He didn’t just hit them over the fence. With his nutritious hitting, he also took the top spot in RBI and on-base percentage. In the month of May, he had 25 RBIs and a .787 on-base percentage, proving to be the go-to guy to score runs when the team needed them.

In addition, Park was solid across the board at the plate, finishing second in runs scored (14) and fourth in batting average (.333). Along with fellow MVP nominee Im Chan-kyu, they formed a battery that helped LG reach the top of the team win column in May.안전놀이터

As of July 7, Park has 14 home runs to lead the league in that category and is on track to become the first catcher to lead the league in home runs in 19 years since Park Kyung-wan (formerly of SK) in 2004.

As the MVP for May, Park will receive a prize of 2 million won, and a donation of 2 million won will also be made to his alma mater, Kaesong Middle School, with the support of Shinhan Bank.
