The Gambia got the better of Honduras.
The Gambia U-20 National Team recorded a 2-1 victory over the Honduras U-20 National Team in the first match of Group F of the FIFA U-20 World Cup 2023 at the Estadio Malvinas Argentina in Mendoza, Argentina at 6:00 a.m. ET on June 23.
The Gambia brought a 4-3-3 formation. Sawane, Boazi, Koli, Njie, Bajo, Drame, Sanyang, Sainé, Jarju, and Zawara started, with Sanyang wearing the goalkeeping gloves. Their counterparts, Honduras, also utilized a 4-3-3 formation. Aseituno, Argüe, Colton, Pena, Sorto, Castillo, Rodas, Ariaga, Zuniga, and Garcia filled out the starting lineup, with Garcia in goal.
Early on, the Gambia struck first. In the first minute, Bojang picked up the ball outside the box and fired a bold left-footed shot that found the back of the Honduran net. Honduras quickly responded. In the fifth minute, Castillo’s cross was met by a header from inside the box by Aseituno to equalize.
Honduras took the momentum. In the 13th minute, Rodas headed a cross from Ariaga into the box, but it went wide left of the goal. After surviving a scare, the Gambia capitalized. In the 18th minute, Dramé’s cross was met by Sainé in the box, but his header was blocked by the goalkeeper. In the ensuing minutes, Jarjoux and Bozangi had shots on goal, but they also missed the target.
The Gambia went on the offensive. In the 28th minute, Njie tried a header in the box off a cross from Zawara, but it was saved by the goalkeeper. Sawane’s shot in the 33rd minute and Koli’s shot in the 36th minute were also off target. Honduras also threatened the Gambia in the 38th minute when Aseituno fired a left-footed shot from the left side of the box off a pass from Colton that was saved by the goalkeeper. There were no further chances and the first half ended 0-0.
The Gambia had the first shot of the second half. Five minutes into the second half, Bojang took a right-footed shot from the left side of the box off a pass from Nzie, but the ball went over the bar. Honduras fought back. The two teams continued to trade attacks. In the 17th minute, Sanyang fired a right-footed shot from inside the box off a pass from Singleton, but it went over the bar. In the 22nd minute, it was Honduras’ turn. Castillo took a daring shot from some distance out, but it too went over the bar.
Midway through the second half, The Gambia pushed forward. In the 29th minute, Sanyang’s header found Collie in the box, but his right-footed shot went wide of the right side of the goal. In the 35th minute, Bozang tried his luck with a right-footed shot in front of goal from a cross by Sanyang, but it was off target.
The Gambia continued to press and it paid off. In the 39th minute, Bojang rattled the Honduran net with a powerful header off a cross from Sanyang. The game ended with a 2-1 victory for the Gambia.
