The Atlanta Braves, the winningest team in Major League Baseball (MLB) this season, turned the first triple play of the season. Boston Red Sox Japanese player Masataka Yoshida was the victim of the triple play.

Triple plays are very rare in MLB. This is only the fifth time since 2000. Notably, the “8-3-5” triple play is the second in MLB history. It was the first in 139 years since the Boston Beaneaters (Atlanta’s predecessor) pulled it off against Providence Grace in 1884.

Despite the triple play success, Atlanta lost the game. They scored the game’s first run in the first inning but went silent after that, falling to 1-7. Despite the loss, the Athletics improved to 64-35 for a .646 winning percentage. They maintained their lead in the National League East and their first-place overall record in the majors. Boston moved into sole possession of fourth place in the American League East with 54 wins (47 losses).
